2018 Gender and Sexuality SRIG Biennial Chair Report
Dr. Colleen Pinar, March 20, 2018
The Gender and Sexuality SRIG, as of March 19, 2018 has 97 members. Of 15 SRIG’s, this ranks 12 (Assessment SRIG 210 – Children with Exceptionalities SRIG 61). However, when comparing the 2018 G&S SRIG membership count with 2016 G&S SRIG membership counts, there is an increase of membership by 27.63 percent (97, 76).
Although more promotion of the SRIG needs to be done, the last person to join the G&S SRIG was March 17, 2018. G&S SRIG ranked first in this area (G&S SRIG 2 days ago – History SRIG 26 days ago). The current chair, Dr. Colleen Pinar, attributes this to both Dr. Patrick Freer and her email and phone communications with NAfME members.
Pinar with the guidance of Dr. Freer, felt it was a priority to keep G&S members notified of G&S current events and topics without being vexatious. G&S tied with the Creativity SRIG in Amplify member discussions. (15 – Philosophy SRIG 2).
On the same line, Pinar updated the G&S SRIG webpage https://genderandsexualitysrig.weebly.com/ Four pages were added to the webpage including 1) a page for the Chair and Chair-Elect, 2) current (2018) NAfME G&S proposals, 3) G&S related dissertations, and 4) related G&S related organizations. Six additional pages were updated: 1) Home, 2) About G&S, 3) G&S related News, 4) Conferences, 5). Call for Proposals, and 6) G&S related books. As of March 19, 2018, the G&S SRIG webpage had an average of 33 visitors to the website and had an average of 71 page views per week. Comparison statistics for the remaining SRIGs was not performed.
To record and to make an inventory of G&S SRIG documents on AMPLIFY, 12 documents were uploaded to the G&S SRIG Community page on AMPLIFY. G&S ranked first in this area (with six SRIGs not utilizing the document library function of AMPlIFY.
I would like to welcome Dr. Patrick Freer as the new chair of G&S. Whenever Freer’s name came up while communicating with NAfME, it was evident he was highly respected. I am sure everyone here today are grateful to his service with the SRIG. I also would like to welcome, Dr. Adam Hackel as the new Chair-Elect. Hackel was not able to attend the conference this year, but assured me that he will attend the next conference 2020 and 2022. G&S members overwhelming voted to affirm Dr. Hackel as Chair-Elect (9 Yes – 1 No).
Seventeen proposals were reviewed for the 2018 NAfME Research Conference. Four proposals were chosen to represent G&S interests -- from a historical basis to current issues that many music teachers feel are important. These include:
Singing within Social Traditions of Rope-Jumping, Top-Spinning, and Hoop Rolling at Mount Holyoke College 1900-1928: Before Women Could Major in Music
Dr. Bonnie Schaffhauser Jacobi
On Stage, Off and In between: Negotiating gay identity and teacher identity in the choral classroom.
Dr. Nicholas McBride
Transvocality and Transgender Identity Formation in the Context of Choral Education
Judas Emmanuel Rosas-Ruelas
Perspectives of a Transgender Music Education Student
Dr. Jason M. Silveira
Dr. Freer and myself welcome these researchers.
Sincerely,
Dr. Colleen Pinar, Chair
